Hookain Lit Lip
The Hookain Lit Lip holds the molasses through the raised centre hole in the reservoir and, with the roughened lip, gives you a clearly defined rim for the attachment. That lets you build the head repeatably without molasses running into the column. The many glazes and colourways change the look, the basic idea stays the same.

The versatile phunnel for HMD setups
For the classic Lit Lip the fill amount is roughly 12 to 16 grams depending on the build; individual versions such as the XL differ, and the figure is stated with each version. Use this value as a guide, not an obligation. Cut, moisture and the distance you want to the HMD decide how high you actually build.
Hookain tip: Place your HMD on the empty head once before the first build. It should sit steadily and not wobble later on an uneven layer of tobacco.
Material and glaze depending on version
The classic Lit Lip is made from two matched clays, the XL from two chamotte clays. Pro and Flat White rely on a particularly dense clay mix; the material is stated with each version. The glaze makes the head durable and more resistant to bleeding, but bleeding cannot be ruled out entirely with ceramics. Small visual differences are part of the production of ceramic heads and do not make the colourways technically different models.
The versions also differ in size: the Lit Lip XL holds about 7 g more than the classic Lit Lip, has a minimally deeper reservoir and a smaller centre hole. The Pro turns out minimally smaller because of its dense clay mix. So compare the details for each article and not just the family name.
Packing Virginia loosely and compacting dark blend in a controlled way
Moist Virginia is usually packed loosely in a phunnel and just below the rim, that is with some distance to the HMD. That keeps the airflow free and the heat does not bite too aggressively at once. Distribute molasses and tobacco evenly rather than pressing individual wet clumps into the reservoir.
Dark blend can be packed more densely depending on the cut. Still start in a controlled way and adjust coal position or lid step by step.
Practical tip: If the flavour turns harsh early, take heat out first. If the head stays sluggish, check fill height and centre hole before simply adding more coal.
Lit Lip, XL or Pro: choose by fill amount
Which version suits depends more on session length and amount of tobacco than on the colourway. With its larger reservoir the XL offers more reserve for longer sessions.
| Version | Fill amount & reservoir | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Lit Lip | about 12 to 16 g depending on build | two matched clays, roughened lip for common HMDs |
| Lit Lip XL | about 7 g more, minimally deeper reservoir | two chamotte clays, smaller centre hole |
| Lit Lip Pro | minimally smaller than the classic Lit Lip | dense clay mix, for HMD and aluminium foil |
Choosing the right Lit Lip
If you are looking for a glazed phunnel with about 12 to 16 g of reservoir on which HMDs from Kaloud to no-name do not slip thanks to the roughened lip, you are right with the Lit Lip. Then choose the variant and glaze that suit your setup.
