The Lavart Nedra is a flat multi-hole bowl made of glazed ceramic from the Ukrainian brand Lavart. It is about 7 cm high, has five slightly raised holes in the chamber and holds about 21 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of Dark Leaf.

Five holes on small raised collars

There are five holes in the base of the chamber. Each hole stands on a small glazed collar and so sits slightly higher than the base. This means molasses does not run straight into the stem as quickly as with holes that lie flat in the base. However, the Nedra does not hold the molasses in the bowl as reliably as a phunnel. So, as with any multi-hole bowl, pack it loosely and not too wet.

Flat chamber

The chamber is only a good 1 cm deep, so the tobacco lies in a thin layer over the holes. So do not pack above the rim, and give the bowl some time when heating up instead of putting on a lot of charcoal straight away.

HMD or foil

The rim has the standard size, so common HMDs sit on it. If you smoke the classic way, stretch foil and leave a few millimetres of space to the tobacco. You can find more bowls from the Ukrainian manufacturer at Lavart.

Cast and glazed by hand

The Nedra is cast from ceramic in Ukraine. This means shape and dimensions are the same on all models. Finishing and glazing are done by hand, which is why every piece looks slightly different in its colour gradient. The glaze of the Graphite model: black with beige.

How to pack the Nedra

Briefly mix and loosen the tobacco in the tin. Let very wet tobacco drain briefly.
Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the chamber and do not press it down. The five holes must not get blocked.
With an HMD, fill to just below the rim; with foil, a little less, so that 2 to 5 mm of space remains.
Put on the HMD or stretch the foil tight, pierce lots of small holes and tighten again.
Heat up with two to three fully glowing coals and control the heat via the number and position of the coals. Add more if needed.

Only once the bowl has cooled down completely, rinse it with lukewarm water and clear the holes. Hot ceramic does not tolerate cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
