Description

The Lavart Aurora Sapphire is a phunnel made of glazed ceramic by the Ukrainian brand Lavart. The Sapphire model shows black, cream, green, blue and dark blue. It is about 9.5 cm high and a good 7 cm wide and holds about 21 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of Dark Leaf.

Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in the ring

In the middle of the bowl sits a raised chimney with a single hole. The tobacco lies in the ring around it, the centre hole stays free. This keeps the molasses in the bowl so it does not run into the stem. This suits moist tobacco and longer sessions well. How phunnel, clay bowl and multi-hole bowl differ is explained in our guide on phunnel bowls.

Medium-depth bowl

The bowl is neither particularly shallow nor particularly deep. You pack the Aurora loosely to just below the rim and do not have to press the tobacco down. The heat comes from above and spreads across the ring.

Open rim for HMD or foil

The Aurora has no dedicated lip for an HMD, the rim is open. You simply put on an HMD that rests on top of the bowl. You can just as well smoke it the classic way with foil.

Handmade in Ukraine

Lavart makes the Aurora in Ukraine from ceramic. Glaze and surface give each model its colour. Because the bowls are worked by hand, the colour gradient and small details of the shape vary slightly from piece to piece.

How to pack the Aurora

  1. Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
  2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the ring around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
  3. Fill it to just below the rim so that the HMD or foil does not squash the tobacco.
  4. Put on the HMD or stretch the foil tight, only pierce holes above the tobacco, not above the chimney.
  5. Heat up with two to three fully glowing coals and control the heat via the number and position of the coals. Add more if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much tobacco fits in the Aurora?

About 21 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of Dark Leaf. The exact amount depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.

Does the Aurora have several holes?

No. The Aurora is a phunnel with one hole in the middle of the bowl.

Can I use an HMD?

Yes, an HMD that rests on top of the bowl fits. The Aurora does not have a dedicated HMD lip.

Do the models differ?

In colour and surface. Shape, bowl and chimney are the same on all models.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you remove the tobacco residue and rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic does not tolerate a cold shock.

Safety & legal
