The Medium Apache by Alpaca is a phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware, handmade in the USA and built for aluminium foil. It is around 10 cm tall, a good 6.5 cm wide at the top and holds around 15 g of Virginia tobacco or 20 g of Dark Leaf.
The smaller version of the Apache
The Medium Apache is based on Alpaca's Apache but holds less tobacco. This makes it a good fit for sessions where a large bowl swallows too much tobacco for you, but you still do not want to keep adding charcoal.
Phunnel: one hole in the centre, tobacco in the ring
In the centre sits a raised spire with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir around it. This keeps the molasses in the bowl so it does not run into the stem, and the heat reaches the tobacco from above through the foil.
Built for aluminium foil
The rim has no standard size, so a common HMD does not sit on it reliably. The Medium Apache is therefore smoked with aluminium foil. You place the coals at the rim above the tobacco and move them along during the session.
Handmade in the USA
Alpaca makes its bowls by hand in the USA from dense stoneware and glazes them afterwards. The glaze gives each colourway its colour. Because every piece is made by hand, size and colour gradient vary slightly from bowl to bowl.
How to pack the Medium Apache
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the spire and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill to just below the rim so the foil does not touch the tobacco.
- Stretch heavy-duty foil or multi-layer aluminium foil tight over the rim, pierce many small holes only above the tobacco, not above the spire, and then tighten it again.
- Place the coals at the rim, heat up for a few minutes and control the heat through the position of the coals. Too much charcoal at once burns the tobacco.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits into the Medium Apache?
Around 15 g of Virginia tobacco or 20 g of Dark Leaf. The exact amount depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.
Can I smoke the Medium Apache with an HMD?
The rim is a special size, so a standard HMD does not sit securely. The bowl is designed for aluminium foil.
What is the difference from the Apache?
The Medium Apache is the smaller version and holds less tobacco than the Apache.
Do the colourways differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same for all colourways. Because every bowl is handmade, each piece looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the hookah, rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic does not tolerate a cold shock; otherwise the glaze can crack.
