The Flat Eric from Hookain is an ultra-flat Phunnel made of black stoneware from the Bowl Busters Edition, here in the Midnight Blue colourway. It is around 7 cm wide and 6.5 cm tall and holds around 9 g of Virginia tobacco or 12 g of dark leaf.
Midnight Blue means here: over the black clay lies a glaze in dark blue, shimmering lighter blue at the lip and edges and turning almost black towards the base. You can find more limited bowls from the edition under Bowl Busters.
Ultra-flat reservoir for short sessions
The reservoir is very flat and not deep, so only a little tobacco fits in. That makes the Flat Eric an economical bowl for shorter sessions, with Virginia as well as dark leaf. For a long evening with friends it is too small.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in the ring
A raised chimney with a single hole sits in the middle, and the tobacco sits in the flat ring all around it. The molasses stays in the bowl and does not run into the smoke column.
Built for the HMD
The rim is standard size, so common HMDs sit on it cleanly. With so little tobacco, an HMD is the simplest way to control the heat. Start with little heat, as a flat bowl overheats faster than a deep one.
Handmade in Seville
Every Flat Eric is handmade from black clay in a small workshop in Seville. Because every piece is made by hand, every bowl is one of a kind. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the Flat Eric
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the flat ring around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill to just below the rim, so that the tobacco touches the HMD at most lightly.
- Fit the HMD, start with little charcoal and light up for a few minutes.
- Adjust the heat carefully. If the smoke is harsh, take heat away; if it gets thin, add some carefully.

Only once the bowl has cooled down completely, rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot withstand thermal shock and may otherwise crack.
