The Classic clay bowl is a plain multi-hole bowl with five holes made of natural, unglazed clay. The reservoir is around 5 cm wide and a good 2 cm deep, so it is a small bowl for short sessions with aluminium foil.
Classic clay bowl with five holes
There are five holes in the floor of the reservoir, and the tobacco lies directly above them. The smoke is drawn through the tobacco down into the stem. Excess molasses can run through the holes, so you pack loosely and not too wet. The small reservoir is quick to pack and quick to start.
Built for aluminium foil
You classically smoke the Classic clay bowl with aluminium foil; a chimney attachment fits as well. An HMD only works if it sits cleanly on the rim and covers the small reservoir.
Unglazed clay
The bowl is handmade and not glazed. Unglazed clay stores heat well and passes it evenly to the tobacco. But it also absorbs molasses and, over time, flavour. If you often switch between very different flavours, a separate bowl per direction is worthwhile. Because clay is a natural product, colour, structure and dimensions differ slightly.
How to pack the Classic clay bowl
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin and let very wet tobacco drain a little.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir and do not press it down, so the holes stay free.
- Fill to just below the rim so that the foil does not touch the tobacco.
- Stretch aluminium foil tight over the bowl, poke many small holes above the tobacco and re-tighten.
- Put the charcoals on, start calmly and regulate the heat via the number and position of the charcoals. Too much charcoal quickly burns the tobacco in the small reservoir.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits in the Classic clay bowl?
The reservoir is around 5 cm wide and a good 2 cm deep, so considerably less tobacco fits than in a large bowl. Exactly how much depends on the cut, moisture and how loosely you pack.
Can I use an HMD?
The bowl is intended for aluminium foil and chimney attachment. An HMD only works if it sits cleanly on the rim.
Why does the bowl smell of old flavours?
Unglazed clay absorbs molasses and flavour. That is normal for clay bowls. Rinsing thoroughly helps; it never disappears completely.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only when the bowl has cooled down completely do you rinse it with lukewarm water and clear the holes. Hot clay does not tolerate a cold shock; it can otherwise crack.
