The Kaloud Lotus 1+ is an aluminium HMD with lid and handle, made in the USA. It sits on the bowl instead of aluminium foil, holds the charcoals and passes the heat from above to the tobacco. It is around 7.4 cm in diameter at the bottom and fits bowls with the standard HMD size. Here it is available in Niris, Azuris and Violis.
Regulate heat with the lid
The Lotus 1+ has ventilation slots in the base, on the side and in the lid. When they are closed the heat stays in the attachment; with open slots it escapes upwards. If it still gets too hot, take the lid off. The handle sits on the lid, so you do not have to touch the metal.
Design: nubs and charcoal rests
At the bottom the Lotus 1+ has nubs that dip into the tobacco. Inside, the charcoals lie on raised rests in the base. That lets air under the charcoals and they go out less often. The inner surface takes two charcoals up to 27 mm; you lay a third diagonally on top of the two. Three large charcoals only fit once they have burned down a little.
Material and colours
The Lotus 1+ is made of aluminium, which passes heat on quickly and also cools down quickly after the session. The metal is light but softer than stainless steel. The colours Niris (black), Azuris (blue) and Violis (violet) are the same model; only the finish differs.
How to use the Lotus 1+
- Fill tobacco loosely into the bowl until it lightly touches the bottom of the HMD or stays just below it.
- Let two to three natural charcoals glow through completely on the charcoal lighter.
- Put the charcoals in the HMD, place the lid on and set the attachment on the bowl.
- Let it warm up for three to five minutes, then regulate the heat with the ventilation slots or by removing the lid.
Care
Let the attachment cool down first and then rinse it with cold water. Dry it thoroughly; deposits and discolouration may appear over time. Never preheat the Lotus 1+ on a stove or hotplate; it can melt.

Do I need aluminium foil?
No. The charcoals lie in the attachment, a foil is not necessary.
Do Niris, Azuris and Violis differ?
Only in colour. Design and dimensions are the same for all three.
How do I regulate the heat?
By the number and position of the charcoals and by the ventilation slots. Closed, they store the heat; open, they let it escape upwards. If there is too much heat, take the lid off.

Off-putting at first since it's not exactly the cheapest HMD, but the value for money is spot on 100% and so it gets used in my setup almost every time. The lid is a gamechanger towards the end of most sessions. I have the Colorway Azuris. Fits every one of my (Hookain) bowls.

The classic among HMDs. Of course a great HMD, though there are now cheaper alternatives price-wise. Visually, though, clearly a highlight
