Blyat - 5-Hole - #420

The Blyat 5-Hole #420 from Hookain is a multi-hole bowl made of stoneware, crafted from white and black clay. It holds around 20 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of dark leaf. The reservoir is the largest in the Blyat range and is meant for longer sessions.

Five holes in the base

With a multi-hole bowl the tobacco sits directly above the holes in the base. The smoke is drawn down through the whole reservoir into the smoke column. Unlike with the Phunnel, there is no chimney to hold back the molasses. Tobacco that is too wet or packed too firmly can therefore run through the holes. If you pack loosely and let excess molasses drain off beforehand, it stays in the bowl.

HMD or aluminium foil

Hookain specifies the Blyat 5-Hole #420 as HMD-suitable. With an HMD you regulate the heat via the slider and the charcoals and do not have to poke any foil. The classic way is to pack it with aluminium foil. Both work as long as the tobacco does not touch the attachment.

Marbled stoneware from Spain

Every Blyat is made by hand in Spain. White and black clay are worked together, which creates the marbling in brown and cream. According to Hookain, the bowl is fired at 1250 °C. Because each piece is made by hand, the grain is different on every bowl.

How to pack the Blyat 5-Hole #420

1. Briefly mix the tobacco in its tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed. Let very wet tobacco drain briefly.
2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir and do not press it down, so that the holes stay clear.
3. Fill to just below the rim, so that the HMD or foil does not touch the tobacco.
4. Fit the bowl and take a short pull. If the draw is hard, loosen the tobacco up a little more.
5. Fit the HMD or stretch aluminium foil tightly and poke lots of small holes. Place the charcoals on top, get it going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the number and position of the charcoals.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock and may otherwise crack.

Why does molasses leak out on the outside?

Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses can soak in and come back out on the outside as it cools. This can never be prevented entirely with ceramic. Over time, fine hairlines can also appear in the surface because the clay expands when heated.
