The Low Load from Hookain is an economical Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. With light nub contact it holds around 8 g of tobacco, and with a gap to the HMD just 6 g is enough. The glaze of the Sky Black model shows blue, brown, light blue and white.
A small reservoir for little tobacco
The Low Load is built for sessions with little tobacco: depending on the tobacco and how you pack, 6 to 12 g go into the reservoir. Hookain designed it so that one pack of tobacco lasts longer.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the HMD gives off the heat evenly from above onto the tobacco. How Phunnel, clay bowl and multi-hole bowl differ is explained in our guide to Phunnel bowls.
Glazed stoneware from Spain
The bowl is made from stoneware in Spain and glazed. The glaze gives each model its colour. With the Bowl Busters 2.0, black and white clay are used, so each of these bowls is marbled differently.
Fits common HMDs
The rim has the standard size for chimney toppers, and common HMDs sit on the Low Load. Because of the heat properties of stoneware, Hookain recommends a topper made of stainless steel; the bowl also works with aluminium. A silicone bowl grommet is intended for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the Low Load
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- For nub contact, fill up to the rim so that the tobacco lightly touches the nubs under the HMD. For a gap, a small space remains to the HMD.
- Put the HMD on, place the charcoal, get it going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the vent.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits in the Low Load?
With light nub contact around 8 g, with a gap 6 g is enough. According to Hookain, Virginia tobacco fits up to 10 g and dark leaf up to 12 g. Exactly how much it turns out to be depends on how loosely you pack.
What does nub contact mean?
Many HMDs have small nubs on the underside. With nub contact, the tobacco lightly touches these nubs; with a gap, a small space remains between the tobacco and the HMD.
What is the difference from the Lit Lip and Lesh Lip?
All three are Phunnel bowls from Hookain. The Low Load has the smallest reservoir and needs the least tobacco. The Lit Lip holds 12 to 16 g, the Lesh Lip up to 24 g, both are built for longer sessions.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour, glaze and clay. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because the glaze flows during firing, every bowl looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the hookah do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses is drawn in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented entirely.
