Baba Bowl - Phunnel - Äquarius

The Baba Bowl from Hookain is a large Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for long sessions with friends. It is around 17 cm tall, just over 14 cm wide and holds around 100 g of Virginia tobacco or 155 g of dark leaf.

Large bowl for long sessions with friends

A typical bowl holds 10 to 30 g of tobacco; the Baba Bowl holds several times that. The reservoir is around 12 cm wide and just over 3 cm deep. It is therefore intended for evenings when many people smoke together and nobody wants to keep topping up. For everyday use on your own, it is too big.

Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring

In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the wide reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the heat spreads over the tobacco from above.

Built for aluminium foil

The rim is much larger than on normal bowls, so a standard HMD does not fit. The Baba Bowl is smoked with aluminium foil. You spread the charcoal along the edge above the tobacco and move it inwards as the session goes on.

Handmade in Spain

Every Baba Bowl is handmade and glazed in Spain from stoneware. The glaze gives each model its colour, and because every piece is made by hand, every bowl is one of a kind. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing it on the hookah. The bowl is heavy, so the hookah should stand stably and the bowl should sit firmly.

How to pack the Baba Bowl

1. Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The middle hole stays free.
3. Fill up to just below the rim so that the foil does not touch the tobacco.
4. Stretch wide, strong aluminium foil tightly over the rim, poke many small holes only above the tobacco and not above the chimney, and then tighten it again so that the foil is not pulled into the middle hole.
5. Spread the charcoal along the edge, take your time getting it going and regulate the heat via the number and position of the charcoals. Too much charcoal at once burns the tobacco.

How much tobacco fits in the Baba Bowl?

Around 100 g of Virginia tobacco or 155 g of dark leaf. How much it turns out to be exactly depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.

Does an HMD fit on the Baba Bowl?

No, a standard HMD is too small for the wide rim. You smoke the Baba Bowl with aluminium foil.

Do the models differ?

In colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because every bowl is made by hand, each piece looks slightly different.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot cope with a cold shock, otherwise the glaze may crack.

Why does molasses come out on the outside?

Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses can soak in and come out again on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
