The Plug from Hookain is a heavy Phunnel bowl made of stoneware, fired at 1250 °C, with a roughened lip for standard HMDs. It holds around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf; packed sparingly, 10 g is enough too.
Roughened lip for a secure HMD fit
Every The Plug has a roughened lip on the reservoir on which the HMD sits firmly. Because the stoneware is fired densely at a high temperature, molasses does not stick to the lip and can be wiped off easily. The rim has the standard size, so common HMDs fit.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the HMD passes the heat evenly from above onto the tobacco.
Stoneware from Seville, fired at 1250 °C
The Plug is made in a small workshop in Seville from high-fired stoneware. The material is very dense, so the bowl is correspondingly heavy and sits solidly in the hand. The glaze gives each model its colour; for the Velvet model: purple, blue, light blue, yellow, beige, black and stone. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing it on the hookah. How to pack The Plug
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The middle hole stays free.
- Fill up to just below the lip so that the HMD does not touch the tobacco. For an economical session, around 10 g is enough.
- Put the HMD on, place the charcoal on top, let it get going for a few minutes and regulate the heat with the airflow control.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits in The Plug?
Around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf. If you pack sparingly, you can also get by with around 10 g.
What is the difference from the POPO?
Like the POPO, The Plug is a Phunnel made of stoneware fired at 1250 °C. Typical for The Plug is the roughened lip on which the HMD sits firmly.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and lip are the same on all models. Because every bowl is made by hand, each piece looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot cope with a cold shock, otherwise the glaze may crack.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Ceramic has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses can soak in and come out again on the outside as it cools. Highly fired stoneware and glaze slow this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
