The Da Vinci Phunnel is a phunnel bowl made of a glazed clay blend for HMD and foil. It is about 7.7 cm wide and has a flat chamber with an inner diameter of a good 6.5 cm.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in the ring
In the middle of the chamber sits a raised chimney with a single hole. The tobacco lies in the ring around it; the molasses stays in the bowl and does not run into the stem. This suits juicy tobacco with plenty of molasses.
Flat, wide chamber
The chamber is a good 1 cm deep and wide in shape. The tobacco lies in a thin layer under the heat and is heated evenly. Give it a few minutes when heating up and adjust the heat in small steps.
HMD or foil
The bowl is designed for both. Common HMDs sit on the rim, which is the easiest way to control the heat. With foil, stretch it tight and only pierce holes above the tobacco, not above the chimney.
Glazed clay blend
The Da Vinci is made of a clay blend and is glazed. The glaze makes the surface smooth, which makes cleaning easier. The models differ in colour and glaze; shape and chamber are the same.
How to pack the Da Vinci Phunnel
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the ring around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill to just below the rim. With foil, leave 2 to 3 mm of space to the foil.
- Put on the HMD or stretch the foil tight, pierce holes above the tobacco and tighten again.
- Place the coals, heat up for a few minutes and control the heat via the number and position of the coals. Add more if needed.

Does my HMD fit on the Da Vinci?
The rim is about 7.7 cm wide. Common HMDs sit on it. With very small or very large attachments, check the diameter first.
Is it better with an HMD or with foil?
Both work. Heat management is easier with an HMD; foil needs a little more feel, but lets you spread the heat finely through the holes.
Why should the centre hole stay free?
The smoke is drawn down through the hole in the chimney. If tobacco falls in, the draw suffers. So only sprinkle the tobacco into the ring.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, bowl and rim are the same on all models.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely, rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic does not tolerate cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
