Grommets
Grommets keep the connections of your hookah airtight: at the head, between the stem and the base, and at the hose connection. If one of them no longer seals properly, the hookah draws in false air. The draw gets light and the smoke thin. Here you will find head and hose grommets made of silicone.

Where each grommet sits
| Grommet | Position |
|---|---|
| Bowl grommet | between the head and the head adapter or stem |
| Sealing ring on the base | between the stem and the base, on some models also on the downstem |
| Hose grommet | in the hose connection; with a ground-joint connection you do not need one |
| Sealing rings on the molasses catcher | on the plug connections of the molasses catcher |
How to run the leak test
Assemble the hookah completely, just without the head. Close the top of the stem with your thumb and pull on the hose. If you get no draw, everything below the head is airtight. If air gets through, work through the connection between stem and base, the hose connection with its grommet, and the purge valve with its ball, one after the other.
This test does not cover the bowl grommet, because the head is off. Check that one by eye and by fit: if the head sits loosely or crooked on the stem, the grommet does not fit or is worn.
How to recognise a worn grommet
Grommets are wearing parts. Replace them when they are cracked, hard, brittle, porous or discoloured, or visibly squashed. Replace a bowl grommet that has partly melted straight away.
Most grommets on the market are made of silicone. To clean them, rinse them in clear water and let them dry well before you put them back. Keep a few spare grommets in stock, especially for the head and the hose.
