Alpaca Bowls Bowls by brand
Alpaca Bowls are handmade phunnel heads from the USA, made of High Temperature Stoneware Clay with a food-safe glaze. The models differ mainly in reservoir size and attachment: a Mini Rook holds 10-15 g and is meant for aluminium foil, a Kilo holds 15-25 g and also runs with an HMD.
Finding Alpaca Bowls for your setup
The most important point before buying: not every Alpaca head packs the same. Shape, reservoir size and rim play a part in how much tobacco you use and whether you smoke with aluminium foil or an HMD. Which attachment fits is stated with each model.
Hookain tip: If you smoke with an HMD, check the attachment information on the item first. The Mini Rook, for example, is meant for aluminium foil only.
Which Alpaca shape suits you?
The Mini Rook holds 10-15 g and has air slots in the phunnel opening. The Kilo holds 15-25 g and can be smoked with an HMD or aluminium foil. The Egy takes up the shape of a traditional Egyptian tobacco head but, as a phunnel, keeps molasses and tobacco out of the stem.
| Model | Fill amount | Attachment |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Rook | 10-15 g | Aluminium foil |
| Egy | 15-20 g | HMD or aluminium foil |
| Kilo | 15-25 g | HMD or aluminium foil |
Because all Alpaca models here are phunnels, the molasses stays in the head instead of running into the stem. How the head smokes in the end still depends on your head packing, the heat and the right attachment.
Matching aluminium foil or HMD cleanly
Not every Alpaca model is built for an HMD. The Mini Rook is meant for aluminium foil only, while Egy and Kilo can also be smoked with an HMD. An HMD only sits cleanly if the diameter and rim of the head match your attachment.
You can smoke every Alpaca model with aluminium foil; stretch the foil taut and leave the centre hole free underneath. Some models have a bridge over the phunnel opening that stops the foil from closing the opening when stretched tight. With an HMD the fit counts: if the attachment sits too loose or too tight, the heat is harder to control.
What to look out for when choosing
- Reservoir: The fill amounts range, depending on the model, from 10-15 g to 25-35 g; the exact figure is given with each model.
- Attachment: Decide beforehand whether you mostly smoke with foil or an HMD, and check the information for the model.
- Handwork: Every head is shaped and glazed by hand; size and colour gradient differ slightly from the photo.
- Care: Let the head cool down after the session before rinsing it with lukewarm water. Slight bleeding and fine crazing in the glaze cannot be entirely ruled out with ceramics.
Choosing an Alpaca head by reservoir and attachment
First decide how much tobacco you want to use per head and whether you smoke with foil or an HMD. That quickly narrows the selection to a few models; only then does colour decide.
