Description

The Drip Bowl Phunnel Cool Water is the Phunnel version of the Drip Bowl from Hookain. The glaze runs in turquoise, blue and light blue with white streaks like drops over the upper rim, while below it the base shows white and grey. The bowl is around 8.5 cm tall, the reservoir measures about 5 cm inside and holds around 20 to 22 g of tobacco.

Phunnel instead of multi-hole

The Drip Bowl is available as a multi-hole bowl and as a Phunnel. With the Phunnel, a raised chimney with a single hole stands in the middle, and the tobacco sits in the ring around it. This keeps the molasses in the reservoir and stops it running into the smoke column, even with very juicy tobacco. You can find the multi-hole version under Drip Bowl 5 Hole, and all Phunnel glazes under Drip Bowl Phunnel.

Material and origin

Hookain mixes two types of clay for the Drip Bowl. The stoneware conducts the heat evenly into the tobacco without it burning quickly. The bowl is handmade in Spain, which is why the glaze flow turns out slightly different on every piece.

How to pack the bowl

  1. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the ring around the chimney, do not press it down.
  2. Fill to just below the rim, the centre hole stays free.
  3. Fit an HMD or foil and light up for a few minutes with two to three pieces of charcoal.

Frequently asked questions

How much tobacco fits in the Drip Bowl Phunnel?

Around 20 to 22 g, depending on cut and how loosely you pack. That is enough for a long session.

Is the bowl suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Phunnel forgives tobacco that is too wet, and the clay mix does not let the heat through too quickly.

Will my bowl look exactly like the photo?

Not quite. The glaze flows during firing, so flow and depth of colour turn out slightly different on every bowl.

Why does molasses come out on the outside?

Ceramic has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses is drawn in and emerges on the outside again as it cools. This is called bleeding, and it decreases over time. Fine hairlines in the glaze are caused by heating and do not change anything about how it works.

How do I clean the bowl?

First let it cool down completely, then rinse it out with lukewarm water and go over it with a soft brush. Hot ceramic can crack under cold water.
