The Mr. Hanky from Hookain is a tall Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware with a small reservoir and a solid stem, built for heavy-duty foil. At 9.5 cm high and 5.5 cm inner diameter, it holds around 12 to 15 g of Virginia tobacco.
Small reservoir, solid stem
The Mr. Hanky is built tall: under the reservoir sits a solid stem, and the reservoir itself is rather small at 5.5 cm inside. Hookain developed it for heavy-duty foil, but a smaller HMD or a sieve topper fit as well. According to Hookain, it plays to its strengths in shorter sessions, with any kind of tobacco.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the heat spreads evenly over the tobacco from above.
Thrown on the potter's wheel
Every Mr. Hanky is thrown by hand on the potter's wheel and glazed at a workshop near Seville. This makes every piece one of a kind. The glaze gives each model its colour, and on the smooth surface molasses and tobacco residue rinse off easily. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the Mr. Hanky
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill to just below the rim so that the foil does not touch the tobacco.
- Stretch heavy-duty foil tight over the rim, poke many small holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney, and then re-tighten it so that the foil is not pulled into the centre hole.
- Place the charcoal, get it going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the position of the charcoal.

How much tobacco fits in the Mr. Hanky?
Around 12 to 15 g of Virginia tobacco. Exactly how much it turns out to be depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.
Does the Mr. Hanky also work with an HMD?
Yes, with a smaller HMD or a sieve topper. It is intended for heavy-duty foil.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because every bowl is thrown by hand, every piece looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the hookah do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses is drawn in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented entirely.
