Choosing the type
With electric lighters, heating surface and power differ. How quickly a given amount of charcoal glows through does not depend on the wattage alone. Also look at the footprint and the grid included.
A gas burner works with a flame; which cartridge it needs and how it is operated is stated on the model. An outdoor lighter manages entirely without electricity and brings the charcoal to a glow with the draught over a fuel.
Embers and location
Turn the charcoal with tongs until it glows on all sides. Place the lighter stably on a heat-resistant surface. Charcoal releases carbon monoxide when lit, so light it outdoors. Let the device and residue cool down completely before cleaning or putting away.
