Popo - Phunnel - Retro Blue

The POPO by Hookain is a heavy Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. It holds around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of Dark Leaf. The Retro Blue is handmade and shows blue and white splashes on a black glaze.

Stoneware fired at 1250 °C

POPO stands for "Power of Phunnel Original". The bowl is made in Spain from stoneware, fired at 1250 °C and glazed. The hot firing makes the material very dense and the bowl heavy. The glaze of the Retro Blue is black and glossy, with blue and white splashes. In a few spots the dark clay stays visible, unglazed.

Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in the ring

In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the well around it. This keeps molasses from running into the smoke column, and the HMD passes the heat evenly onto the tobacco from above.

Roughened lip, fits common HMDs

The rim has the standard size for chimney toppers, common HMDs sit on it and close cleanly at the outer edge. The lip on top is roughened so the HMD sits firmly and does not slip. If you prefer smoking with aluminum foil, stretch it directly over the rim. A silicone head gasket is intended for sealing on the shisha.

How to pack the POPO

1. Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the well around the chimney. Do not press Virginia down, Dark Leaf only lightly at most. The center hole stays free.
3. Fill only up to just below the lip so the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
4. Put the HMD on, add the coals, heat for a few minutes and regulate the heat with the vents.

How much tobacco fits in the POPO?

Around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of Dark Leaf. The exact amount depends on how loosely you pack.

What is the difference to the Lit Lip?

The well is of similar size. The difference lies in the material: the POPO is made of stoneware fired at 1250 °C, the Lit Lip of two matched types of clay.

Can I smoke the POPO with aluminum foil?

Yes. Stretch the foil tightly over the rim and poke the holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney in the middle.

Do the models differ?

Only in color and glaze. Shape, well and rim are the same for all models. Because the glaze flows during firing, every bowl looks slightly different.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the shisha, rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, and the glaze may crack otherwise.

Why does molasses come out on the outside?

Even densely fired stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, some molasses soaks in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
