Aluminium HMDs – light and direct
Aluminium HMDs hold charcoal and pass the heat on to the head. The material reacts faster to changes in heat than stainless steel. Base, rim and the design with or without a lid also matter for your choice.

Open HMD or lid model?
An open model such as the Darkside D-Heater is regulated through the amount and position of the charcoal. With a lid model, the lid position comes into play. General instructions on closing the lid therefore do not apply to every aluminium HMD.
The seat on the head
The head must offer a suitable surface for the attachment. Check diameter and rim width instead of choosing by the term phunnel alone. Even an HMD with a lip does not automatically fit every model.
More on the comparison with other attachments can be found in the guide to heat management.
