The Conil from Hookain is a Tradi bowl with five holes made of stoneware, built for the HMD. It has a small reservoir and holds around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf.
Tradi design with five holes
Tradi stands for the classic design: the tobacco sits directly above the holes in the base, and the smoke is drawn down through the whole reservoir into the smoke column. Unlike the Phunnel, there is no chimney to hold back the molasses. Tobacco that is too wet or packed too firmly can therefore run through the holes. If you pack loosely and let excess molasses drain off beforehand, it stays in the bowl.
Small reservoir for the HMD
The rim has the standard size, and common HMDs sit on it cleanly. Hookain recommends the Conil for smoking with an HMD. Thanks to the small reservoir, you get by with little tobacco. Exactly how much fits can vary slightly because it is handmade. The classic way with aluminium foil works as well.
Handcrafted in Spain
Every Conil is handmade from stoneware in Spain. Because every piece is made by hand, shape and shade turn out slightly different on every bowl. A silicone bowl grommet is intended for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the Conil
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed. Let very wet tobacco drain briefly.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir and do not press it down, so the holes stay clear.
- Fill to just below the rim so the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
- Put the bowl on and take a short pull. If the draw is hard, loosen the tobacco up a little more.
- Put the HMD on, add the charcoal, let it get going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the charcoal and the slider.
Milky is an unglazed brown, like milk chocolate. The clay gains a little more patina with every session. More multi-hole bowls for HMD and foil can be found among the Hookain multi-hole bowls.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits in the Conil?
Around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf. Exactly how much it ends up being depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.
Which HMD fits the Conil?
The rim has the standard size, and common HMDs fit. Alternatively, you can pack the Conil with aluminium foil.
Why is molasses running into the smoke column?
The tobacco was too wet or packed too firmly. With the Tradi bowl it sits directly above the holes, so excess molasses finds its way down. Pack more loosely and let wet tobacco drain beforehand.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock and may otherwise crack.
Why does molasses leak out on the outside?
Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses can soak in and come back out on the outside as it cools. With ceramic this can never be fully prevented.
