The POPO from Hookain is a heavy Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. It holds around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of dark leaf.
Stoneware, fired at 1250 °C
POPO stands for “Power of Phunnel Original”. The bowl is made in Spain from stoneware, fired at 1250 °C and glazed. The hot firing makes the material very dense and the bowl heavy. The Green Water glaze shows beige, stone and green.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the HMD gives off the heat evenly from above onto the tobacco.
Roughened lip, fits common HMDs
The rim has the standard size for chimney toppers, common HMDs sit on top and finish cleanly at the outer edge. The lip on top is roughened so that the HMD sits firmly and does not slip. If you prefer to smoke with aluminium foil, you stretch it directly over the rim. A silicone bowl grommet is intended for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the POPO
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney. Do not press Virginia down, dark leaf at most lightly. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill only to just below the lip so that the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
- Put the HMD on, place the charcoal, get it going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the vent.

How much tobacco fits in the POPO?
Around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of dark leaf. Exactly how much it turns out to be depends on how loosely you pack.
What is the difference from the Lit Lip?
The reservoir is similar in size. The difference lies in the material: the POPO is made of stoneware that is fired at 1250 °C, the Lit Lip of two matched types of clay.
Can I smoke the POPO with aluminium foil?
Yes. Stretch the foil tight over the rim and poke the holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney in the middle.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because the glaze flows during firing, every bowl looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the hookah do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Even densely fired stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, some molasses is drawn in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented entirely.
