The POPO by Hookain is a heavy Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. It holds around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of dark leaf.
Stoneware, fired at 1250 °C
POPO stands for “Power of Phunnel Original”. The bowl is made in Spain from stoneware, fired at 1250 °C and glazed. Thanks to the hot firing, the material is very dense and the bowl is heavy. The glaze of the SWG Full White plays in white, with beige and Stone added.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies all around it in the reservoir. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the HMD passes the heat evenly onto the tobacco from above.
Roughened lip, fits common HMDs
The rim has the standard size for chimney attachments, and common HMDs sit on top and finish cleanly at the outer edge. The lip on top is roughened so that the HMD sits firmly and does not slip. If you prefer to smoke with aluminium foil, you stretch it directly over the rim. A silicone grommet is provided for sealing on the hookah.
How to pack the POPO
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney. Do not press Virginia down, and dark leaf only lightly at most. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill only to just below the lip so that the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
- Place the HMD, add the charcoal, let it get going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the vent.

How much tobacco fits in the POPO?
Around 13 g of Virginia tobacco or 17 g of dark leaf. Exactly how much it ends up being depends on how loosely you pack.
What is the difference from the Lit Lip?
The reservoir is of a similar size. The difference lies in the material: the POPO is made of stoneware fired at 1250 °C, the Lit Lip of two matched types of clay.
Can I smoke the POPO with aluminium foil?
Yes. Stretch the foil tightly over the rim and poke the holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney in the middle.
Do the models differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because the glaze flows during firing, every bowl looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
Why does molasses leak out on the outside?
Even densely fired stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, some molasses soaks in and comes back out on the outside as it cools down. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
